Paper Crafts

Another one of my interests is paper crafts. Paper can be transformed into anything, and I love working it into design.

I made these invitations for our 2009 Halloween party. The envelope was made of craft paper, and the invitations were made of paint chips, vellum, and masking tape. Everything was splattered with watered-down red acrylic paint.

Sewing

I love to sew: clothing, costumes, home decor, accessories--I just love to sew. I taught myself to sew near the end of 2007. I enrolled in MSU's basic sewing class in the Spring of 2009, and am currently taking MSU's Advanced Clothing Construction course.

As I've advanced as a home-sewer, I've become more interested in drafting my own patterns. I love to draw inspiration from high fashion, or from vintage styles.

One of the most recent items I've sewn is a hat for a friend's child. This hat was sewn from a Japanese pattern. I also sewed mine and my husband's Halloween costumes last year.

My favorite thing to sew is children's clothing, and my favorite person to sew for is my little sister (she is also a great model!).

I've sold my children's clothing on Etsy, but school demanded more attention, so I closed my shop last summer.

Construction Techniques Study Model

Spring 2008

This model was constructed to show our understanding of construction techniques. It is made of balsa wood, Styrofoam, felt, and paper. Some pieces are held together with super glue, and all wood pieces are held together with straight pin. The scale is 1/2" = 1'-0".

Gowoon Jeong was my teammate for this project.
We received first place in the Spring 2008 mini-show for Residential Design I.

Spring 2008/Spring 2010

This project was originally done in the Spring of 2008. To prepare for the Senior Show, I decided to redo this project to see how much I've improved.

The first three images are the new drawings; I haven't finished to color drawing yet.

The fourth image is the project from two years prior.

For this project, students had to find a magazine image of a room, trace it, and then produce four drawings: profile line, ebony pencil shading, dot drawing, and color drawing.

Line drawing was made with markers & pens.

Shading made with an ebony pencil.

Dot drawing made with .1, .3, and .5mm markers.

Color drawing made with Prismacolor pencils.

Art 101 Projects

Spring 2008

The final project for Art 101 was a metamorphosis sculpting assignment. Students chose two different objects and sculpted them from clay. Next, three additional object were sculpted from the student's mind, showing a transformation between the two initial objects.

My metamorphosis was between a rabbit and a tea kettle.

Art 100 Projects

Fall 2007

One of the first assignments in Art 100 was to create an illusionary image using only black ink to create varying widths of lines.

The next assignment was to copy, stretch, cut, and paste the lines from the first project and create a new composition.

Next, we moved on to combining geometric and organic shapes to create a composition with black ink only.

In a transitional assignment, we began experimenting with acrylic paints. This project reflects a study of low and high contrast.

After familiarizing ourselves with the use of acrylics, we remade our line composition project using graduating contrasts and colors of paint.

Another assignment involved cutting architectural elements from magazines and forming a collage; paying close attention to complementary colors.

Our final project was to again create a collage from magazine clippings, but to then paint the collage with acrylics.

Lighting Design

Fall 2008

For MSU's Color & Light course, students were required to design and create an original light, keeping track of cost along the way.

I created my hanging light from IBC Cream Soda bottles, fishing line, a circular saw blade, and various lighting parts. My total cost was just under $50.

Stavig Living Room

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Project redesigned Spring 2010

For MSU's Color & Light course, students were required to create a client; choosing their heritage, location, and design tastes. A living room was then to be designed based on the needs of the client.

My clients were the Stavigs; a Norwegian couple relocating to Vancouver. Their desire for an eclectic, yet simple space was the basis for my design.

I first drafted their current floor plan in AutoCAD, then added spatial solutions, and then added in color solutions.

I found samples in MSU's Interior Design sample library that fit with the proposed color scheme and then drafted a Sketch-up model, applied the selected finishes, and rendered the image with Indigo Renderer.

All pages were assembled with Adobe Illustrator.

2010 Senior Showcase

Missouri State University

Housing & Interior Design

Spring 2010

Each Spring, a class of Interior Design seniors at Missouri State is required to work as a team to organize an event where they each have the opportunity to showcase their best art & design work from their undergraduate courses & experiences.

This Spring, I was a member of this class and volunteered to be on the "look committee;" a group of seniors in charge of the booklets that are available at the show. Each student in the class submitted a rough idea for the cover and "look" of our booklet; the mood board to the left shows the idea I came up with: a simple, iconic piece of furniture + Pantone's Spring 2010 color palette + various patterns. The next image shows another idea based on the direction the class seemed to like most.

In the "look committee," I undertook some very important tasks. Another student, Christa Trtan, and myself collaborated to design the booklet cover. Christa designed the watercolor image. I edited the image color, created the chair, and chose the fonts. The MSU logo was created by Parker Asay.

I also took charge of the interior of the booklet, designing the layout, choosing fonts, inserting each student's photo & information, and communicating with the printing company.

My other contributions to the 2010 Senior Showcase include:

+creating a blog for the show, which housed a form that I created for student profile submissions, and later a map showing the exact location of our show (see below)

+organizing a system for students to upload and download their photos & other important documents

+using the cover design to create a name tag for each student

In addition to working on my own portfolio to display at the show, I helped several students create and format websites, blogs, & business cards.

Commercial/Residential Design

Boutique + Craft Studio + Bakery + Apartments
Downtown Springfield, Missouri

Missouri State University, Spring 2009

This project was completed as part of MSU's Contract Design I course. Each student was given the building plans for a vacant building in downtown Springfield, Missouri.

Requirements for this project included:

+utilization of basement level space
+commercial use of main level space
+residential space planning for second & third levels
+complete floor plans for each level
+programming, adjacencies matrices, traffic patterns
+finishes & finish schedule
+electrical & reflected ceiling plans
+colored perspective

I used both the basement and main level as a
commercial space; designing an open, airy space
containing three separate businesses:
+a boutique for handmade crafts
+a cupcake dessert shoppe

+a craft studio space

The two upper levels of this building were divided
into three large apartments, each with an upper level.
One apartment is 1 bed/1.5 bath, another is 2 bed/2 bath, and the last is 2 bed/2.5 bath.

Most pages were created using Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator. Perspective was drafted by hand, then colored by hand with watercolor paint & Prismacolor pencils.

A Study in Shibui Design

Fall 2008

This small assignment in MSU's Color & Light course required that I choose a room from a magazine, then choose a new set of materials based on the Shibui design principles. I then redrew the magazine image, and rendered it with the materials and finishes that I had chosen.

Shibui is a term of Japanese design that describes the subdued, tranquil effect that natural, serene, soothing, elegant, and sensual colors and textures
have on us.

Great Room Exhibition Wall Section

John & Marion Segwick Home

Springfield, MO

Fall 2008

This project was completed as part of MSU's Color & Light course. A simple wall section was given to each student. Instructions for this project were to create a client profile describing John & Marion Segwick, emphasizing their art interests and taste. Next, a minimum of ten works of art were to be selected, arranged on the
wall sections, and "lit" appropriately.

All interior elements of the section were

drawn by hand, then shaded using Sharpie

markers & pens, and Prismacolor

markers & pencils.

Pizza Plus

Springfield, MO

Spring 2009

For MSU's Contract I course, I was required to work within a group to design a look for a real-world client. This particular client happened to be two gentleman who were opening a restaurant in Springfield, Missouri. The floor plan, along with their ideas, were presented to us. Our task was to choose furniture, lighting, wall colors/finishes, and flooring for the dining space.

Residential Bathroom

ADA Compliant

Fall 2009

This bathroom was designed as part of a study of the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and regulations, and was later incorporated into a full home design.

The requirements of this project included correct placement of grab bars, space planning to accommodate a wheelchair, ADA compliant fixtures; including tub, toilet, sink, shower, and shower seat.

This bathroom is also full of sustainable and eco-friendly finishes: The floor tile, green subway tile, and white subway tile are all 98% pre-consumer recycled content, made from manufacturing waste of windshield production and window glass from demolished buildings. Tile on the ceiling and upper part of the wall is made from the by-product of the cork-stopper industry. The cork rounds also add an interesting texture to the room.

Porter Home Office

Denver, Colorado

Spring 2008

This home office was designed for Mrs. Porter, the author of several best-selling children's books. The client wanted a home office where she could work on new book ideas, but that was more subdued than the usual "children's" environment. Other requirements included live plants, artwork, storage, task lighting, and an addition sitting area.

The resulting space is a traditional room anchored by the deep aqua and cream color scheme. Some special details include the North wall display: shadow boxes showcasing Mrs. Porter's bestselling books (highlighted by track lighting), and the wall-mounted vases flanking each side of the credenza.

Floor plan, elevations, and axonometric drawing all hand-drafted and rendered by hand with Prismacolor markers & pencils. All samples pulled from the MSU sample library.
